Company Overview
Sun Cobalt is a leading developer of server appliances that extend the reach of the Internet by setting new standards for value, integration, and ease of use. Sun Cobalt's award winning product line - the Sun Cobalt Qube appliance, Sun Cobalt CacheRaQ appliance, Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliance, and Sun Cobalt RaQ XTR server appliance are widely deployed as Internet and web hosting server appliances at business, educational institutions and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Sun Cobalt's solutions are delivered through a global network of distributors, value-added resellers and ISPs. Founded in 1996, Cobalt Networks, Inc. was aquired by Sun Microsystems, Inc., on December 7, 2000.

Solutions Overview
Sun Cobalt has developed a line of server appliances with a standards-based architecture that addresses the needs of a growing segment of Internet users.

Sun Cobalt RaQ Server Appliances - The Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliances provide a full range of Internet services including email, web hosting, and file transfer protocol for ISPs. ISPs can dedicate individual Cobalt RaQ server appliances to individual clients, thus allowing for greater security, quality of service, reliability and increased availability of higher margin value-added services such as electronic commerce. ISPs can also use the Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliances for virtual hosting, allowing multiple domains to be hosted on each Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliance.

Sun Cobalt Qube Appliance - The company's family of Sun Cobalt Qube appliances provides a full range of Internet/intranet services including email, web publishing, firewall, NAT, DHCP, private discussion groups, and cross-platform file sharing. A Sun Cobalt Qube appliance can be fully managed using any web browser.

Sun Cobalt CacheRaQ Appliance - Sun Cobalt's Caching appliances speed up web access and eliminate redundant traffic traveling over wide area network links. After a web object is requested for the first time, a local Sun Cobalt CacheRaQ appliance fulfills subsequent requests for the same web object up to 10x faster than uncached objects. Caching performance can be scaled effectively by clustering Sun Cobalt CacheRaQ appliances using the company's "InstaCache" technology or Level-4 switches.

Sun Cobalt RaQ XTR Server Appliance - The Sun RaQ XTR is the ideal server appliance for service providers delivering or hosting content-rich, interactive Web sites or other complex software applications requiring a sophisticated back-end infrastructure.

Target Markets - Sun Cobalt's products are ideally suited for Internet Service Providers, businesses, workgroups and project teams, educational institutions, Web designers and networked application developers:

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that want low-priced, high-density dedicated hosting, co-location, or caching solutions
Businesses that want a simple, low-priced, on-site Internet/intranet server, network attached storage, or caching solutions to take maximum advantage of their limited wide-area bandwidth
Workgroups and project teams that need a quick and easy mechanism to develop and distribute information
Educational institutions-especially middle schools and high schools-looking for cost-effective communication solutions for linking parents, students and teachers
Web designers and network application developers interested in cost-effective development and deployment solutions
Differentiators

Compelling value proposition - The company designs its server appliances to deliver exceptional performance at a substantially lower installed cost than general purpose servers.
Ease-of-use and manageability - All of the company's products incorporate a simple set-up procedure designed to require less than 15 minutes for installation and operation. A remote browser enables administration from any location, thus eliminating the need for and cost of a dedicated client.
Scalable Performance - The company's low cost server appliances are solid building blocks for scalable solutions. As the amount of traffic handled by a Cobalt server appliance increases, additional units can be clustered to add greater capacity at little additional expense beyond the cost of the units themselves.
Interoperability - The company's products employ a standards-based, open architecture to function across multiple operating environments, including Windows, Windows NT, Macintosh and Unix.
